How to get golden tones in your photos?

Let me see if I can better describe what I want to achieve...I've always been a fan of photos with that "golden warmth" quality. Sort of like they were taken during summertime at dusk, this light quality is often found in photos from the seventies and eighties. I'm not a skilled photographer, so I don't know what causes this effect or if there is a specific name for it...I'm just wondering if anyone can help me duplicate it using a digital camera or photoshop. I'm thinking it could possibly be due to the film being slightly over-exposed, but again I don't know. Any help is much appreciated, thanks.
